NEWS: Rep. Jamaal Bowman Leads Week of Healing in NY-16
NEW YORK – Congressman Jamaal Bowman (NY-16), a longtime advocate for community healing through action and dialogue, will lead a Week of Healing in New York’s 16th Congressional District consisting of multiple events and actions, including an announcement with Governor Kathy Hochul at the Boys & Girls Club of Mt. Vernon.
“As a Member of Congress, an educator and a human being, I have seen and understand the importance of healing, and I’m looking forward to leading our community through action and conversation,” said Congressman Jamaal Bowman. “This week, I will host community conversations and briefings, and make several announcements that will help us to overcome trauma, violence, and abuse, and promote healing. Throughout my life I have seen the way that healing can revolutionize people and communities, and this week will serve as a catalyst to do just that.”
Monday, November 22 – Healing in Action
Healing requires action that derives from introspection and deep reflection about how to overcome pain and trauma. Congressman Bowman’s “Healing in Action” events will focus on personal and policy-level action that will help to heal our community.
On Monday, November 22, Congressman Bowman will join Governor Hochul at the Boys & Girls Club of Mt. Vernon, 350 S 6th Ave, Mt Vernon, NY 10550, at 10:30 am ET to announce the results of their months-long collaboration to address violence and other related issues by supporting local organizations throughout New York’s 16th Congressional District.
Additionally, Congressman Bowman will announce legislation that will set aside a specific day for survivors of trauma to connect and elevate their stories.
Tuesday, November 23 – Healing in Conversation
Healing doesn’t always happen alone and being in conversation with one another is a critical component to the healing process. With conversation comes mutual understanding, learning, compassion, and empathy, and with all of that comes progress. Congressman Bowman’s “Healing in Conversation” events will focus on the lived experiences of others and how to best support members of our community through the obstacles they have faced.
On Tuesday, November 23, Congressman Bowman will host a violence prevention town hall with community members who have been both directly and indirectly impacted by violence. This town hall will serve as an opportunity for open dialogue between Congressman Bowman and his constituents. Due to the personal and private nature of these conversations, this event will be closed to the press.
Additionally, Congressman Bowman will convene a CARES briefing for local leaders and elected officials to discuss how best to utilize tools to support students struggling with substance use and mental health diagnoses. More information on the CARES program can be found here and here. A livestream will be available on Congressman Bowman’s YouTube channel.
